Taste: Black wine with a reddish rim. Young and tight on the nose with a brooding quality that shows its youth and mountain heritage. Racy and sleek with black fruits, toasty oak and sweet spices. Ripe, dark, and intense throughout this wine is undeniably one of the best expressions of Mt. Veeder Cabernet with exceptional mouthfeel. It also happens to be very tight so decant for now if you must commit infanticide. Previous bottlings have all been priced in the $40-80 range so this is an exceptional deal at $19.
Cameron Confidential: Score! This deal came to us through and unexpected source – our bank. Apparently they had financed the original partnership and it was now splitting with the sale of the property to a new owner. The new owner, a big player in our business, had bought the winery primarily for the gorgeous property up on Mt. Veeder and was not interested in either the brand or the wines. Our winemaker showed up a couple of hours after we heard about the potential sale and bought the entire inventory of Mt. Veeder wines. I am tempted to name the winery as its new owner will not be continuing the brand but I am not sure how the previous owners would feel about that. Probably best to keep my mouth shut.
Unless you have been to Napa its quite possible you wouldn’t have heard of the winery anyhow as they sold their inventories direct to consumer and had little retail distribution other than their tasting room. The wines are made with no expense spared and retailed out of the tasting room for between $60-80. The original winery's 2004 cabernet received a 92 score and their 2005 just received a 93 score from the Wine Enthusiast. Unbelievable deal at $19.
