Taste: The following is from my Lot 38 write-up: "The color is an attractive deep, dark purple hue, and the initial aromas expose the intensity and depth of the wine. A myriad of rich, ripe berry fruits with spice undertones from the oak are complemented by the glorious complexities of the characters of fine leather, flavors that are only derived from intense, old vines." From a flavor profile perspective, Lot 77 is much the same. Stylistically, Lot 77 wine is very similar to Lot 38, but the bigger overall tannin structure is only now beginning to release the fruit—clearly this is another cellar selection. Cork finished.
Cameron Confidential: This is the second offering of the 100-year-old vine Shiraz we picked up from our first trip to Australia a little over a year ago. We managed to get more wine from the winery this year with a bit of a better price, which we have passed along to you.
The 2006 harvest in the Barossa was considered good to excellent with a quick heat build-up and rapid harvest for early ripening varietals. A long-cooling period hung Shiraz fruit on the wine for an extended period, creating the conditions for good color and excellent tannin development. These tannins have contributed to an overall structure far superior to the 2005 100-year-old vine Shiraz, but the trade-off is one of accessibility—the 2006, even with 18 months in barrel and more than 6 months in bottle, is still unwinding.
