Taste: For being just up the road from Rutherford, these wines (Lots 15 and 16) are worlds apart. Beautiful, elegant nose of cherries, berries, and violets. Once this Cab hits the palate, though, one notices something very different about it: Incredibly smooth entry leads into a complex mouthful of fruit flavors that rise up with virtually no detectable tannin, a hallmark of great Stags Leap Cabernet. About as balanced a wine as you can get. Lovely finish is pure fruit and chocolate. Pristine and pure Cabernet!
Cameron Confidential: What more to say? It's Stags Leap Cabernet! OK—that's getting old, but this wine is dynamite. Sourced primarily from a vineyard just east of the Silverado Trail in Stags Leap in deep volcanic soils at the foot of looming mountains. The 2004 harvest was very sparse, but the grapes had exceptional flavor intensity. Like Lot 15, you're looking at components sourced from $35 to $50 a bottle programs.
