Taste: Deep magenta with a matching rim. Ripe berry and plum aromas open up to flavors of spicebox and toast that all come together in a delicious mouthful. Big and boisterous, this wine has a lively acidity that is offset by an incredible density. Marked by creamy oak, this is a supple, well-integrated style, with excellent structure, depth, and range of flavors, ending with a firm, flavorful band of tannins.
Cameron Confidential: This wine comes from the Spencer Rolson Vineyards, which consistently produce 92-point wines. This Zin comes from the Madder Lake Vineyard, located directly north of Mount St. Helena, in the northern reaches of the folded and craggy Mayacamas Range. With tons of boulders and cobble, this is a seriously steep and rocky vineyard with stellar drainage and north/northwestern exposures.
This small block is head trained and tightly spaced at an elevation of 2,250 feet. The increased exposure, elevation, and rocky soils limit yields naturally to an average of 1.5 tons per acre. Clusters are few and far between, concentrating the fruit intensely and producing a black, structured, and serious wine. At $13, it's an exceptional deal.
