Frunza started in Bordeaux with winemaker John at Vinexpo. He asked me to taste some wines from a winery in Romania. I just laughed and said OK. Toward the end of the day I met Philip, a Brit running Cramele Recas, near Timisoara. This winery has an incredible history of viticulture spanning over three centuries—why else would a crazy Brit be in Romania!
Long story short, I tasted the wine, which they called Frunza, and was really blown away by the quality. But, at the end of the day, I just decided it would be way too tough to market the wines under our label.
Not one to give up, Philip sent me some new Frunza wines that we just flat-out loved and decided come what may, we had to find a home for these wines. So, we presented Frunza to Sam’s Club who reacted the same way: The wines are delicious, and the value price is a perfect fit for their retail model.
Fall 2010, you can find Frunza at Sam’s Club nationally. First to market will be our Frunza 2009 Merlot and 2009 Pinot Noir. To follow will be Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio. The value of Frunza is the outstanding quality of wine for an incredibly low price. Frunza will be available for under $7 at Sam’s and will compare to wines that retail in the $10 to $15 range.
Enjoy this beautiful wine and its summary tale.
Cheers!
