Carbon Neutral
At Cameron Hughes Wine, our most recent challenge wasn’t a difficult vintage...it was the bitter taste left by the realization that as our business grows, so will our negative impact on the environment. After all, we rely heavily on shipping services to receive wines from around the globe and make customer deliveries across the country. If we really break out the “true” cost of the wine, shouldn’t that be factored into the equation?
And so we began to wonder – is there something we can do as part of our business model to mitigate the toll we take on the planet?
The answer – a resounding YES! Using calculators developed by the Carbon Fund, a non-profit created in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University, we’ve tallied up the emissions generated by our business as a result of travel, freight and customer shipping activities and signed on to Carbonfree, a program that allows Cameron Hughes Wine to offset our emissions, making us the first American wine negociant company to be 100 percent carbon neutral. (Yes, that is a challenge to other wine companies.)
Signing on with Carbonfree has been one of the easiest business decisions we’ve ever made, and we’d like to encourage anyone who’s interested to check it out. After all, what could be more valuable than protecting the people and the places we love?
